Over a century and a half since John Stuart Mill made the liberal democratic case for free speech and viewpoint diversity in On Liberty, the issues remain more fraught than ever. His arguments’ value will be front and center in the upcoming second edition of All Minus One. Drawing from the second chapter of On LibertyAll Minus One makes the classic text accessible and relevant to modern readers and features original illustrations of Mill’s metaphors.

In honor of the second edition release, Heterodox Academy (HxA) and The Sphere Education Initiative, a project of the Cato Institute, are proud to have presented a panel conversation with the book’s editors, Jonathan Haidt and Richard Reeves, and illustrator, Dave Cicirelli. They spoke to their experiences creating this new edition, discussed Mill’s relevance on the individual, relational, institutional, and national levels, and explored Mill’s arguments in today’s social media world. The conversation was a great opportunity for educators looking to incorporate Mill’s work and ideas in their classrooms.

This virtual event was open to the public and took place on Thursday, April 22 at 7pm ET / 4pm PT. Advanced registration was required.
