HxA Member Workshop: Op-Ed Writing for Public Audiences

Monday, March 22 (9am-12:30pm ET) & Tuesday, March 23 (12:30pm-4pm ET)
This two-day workshop, led by Jeff Snyder, focused on how to write and publish op-ed pieces for public audiences. It was hands-on, with focused small group discussions and a variety of writing activities. Participants learned some of the practical writing techniques and strategies that are essential to writing for a readership that extends beyond our professional, academic peers. They also became familiar with the publication process, from submissions to revisions. All participants came away from the workshop with the first draft of an op-ed. Topics included “How to Leverage Your Academic Expertise,” “How to Write for the Public,” “How to Pitch Editors,” and "Navigating Feedback."About the workshop leader:
Jeff Snyder is an Associate Professor in the department of Educational Studies at Carleton College. His research focuses on modern U.S. history, exploring questions about race, national identity and the purpose of public education in a diverse, democratic society. He is the author of the book Making Black History and a frequent contributor to newspapers and magazines, including Boston Review, The New Republic and The Washington Post.
