Heterodox Academy has quickly grown from a small group of roughly a dozen professors to more than 1,700 as of early January 2018. Over the summer of 2017, we interviewed select members about their motivations to join the organization and the issues that arise in climates of orthodoxy on campus.
The goal was to present, and provide context for, our mission via some of the most prominent thought leaders from academia. The result is the video we present here.
We encourage you to share this post with your network to help advance our mission to deepen the commitment to, and application of, strategies to increase viewpoint diversity, mutual understanding and constructive disagreement at colleges and universities.
Heterodox Academy members featured in the video include:
- Leda Cosmides, UC Santa Barbara
- Robert P. George, Princeton U
- Jonathan Haidt, NYU Stern
- Glenn Loury, Brown U
- John McWhorter, Columbia U
- Steven Pinker, Harvard U
- Richard Shweder, U Chicago
- Nadine Strossen, New York Law School
- John Tooby, UC Santa Barbara

“There is a tribalism that has emerged on college campuses…” Rick Shweder
“You see the sort of equivalent of inquisitions going on at many institutions where people are hauled before tribunals when all they have really done is question some sort of orthodoxy.” Robert P. George
“If you disagree with someone, you don’t shout them down; you make an argument for what you think.” Leda Cosmides
“Don’t try to silence them, that is never going to be effective. Train yourself to engage with them.” Nadine Strossen
“One of the things I think is important at universities, is to follow a principle which says anyone who is qualified and prepared to put their own minds at risk is welcome here.” Rick Shweder
“This is a place where we are engaged collectively with each other to find the truth. We do that by taking positions and expecting- and welcoming- people to push back. We have trained students so they don’t feel that this is an attack, this is the process.” Jon Haidt
“At Heterodox Academy, we are not here to attack universities. We are not here to criticize them. We are here to help. We are here to improve academic life.” Jon Haidt
“The whole educational process will be enriched and enlivened by a multiplicity of voices and perspectives.“ Nadine Strossen
“We are trying to protect the rarified pursuit of knowledge, which is a specialized enterprise.” Glenn Loury
