Heterodox Academy created and validated the Campus Expression Survey (CES) to gauge the extent to which college students believe that they can safely express their opinions on campus. It addresses specific questions like:
- Are people censoring their opinions?
- Who is engaging in this self-censorship?
- About what topics are they self-censoring?
- What negative consequences are they trying to avoid by self-censoring?
To answer such questions about your college or university, administer the CES on your campus using this administration manual. It contains the materials necessary to administer this survey, including the full text of its items and administration instructions. Anyone is free to administer the CES, using this manual, and to modify it to suit their specific purposes.
