Welcome to the OpenMind Platform

(Previously the Viewpoint Diversity Experience)

In the wake of the 2016 presidential election, Americans are discovering that they are more deeply divided than they had realized. Rising cross-partisan hatred is intensifying an “us versus them” attitude that motivates people to accept the worst possible version of the other side’s beliefs, and the most flattering version of their own. These visions are distorted and counterproductive, particularly in universities where the clash of ideas could be so conducive to learning and growth.

The OpenMind Platform provides a set of tools which universities, organizations, and corporations can use to depolarize their communities and foster a culture of mutual understanding across differences. OpenMind is a free, online psychology-based curriculum designed to help individuals cultivate intellectual humility and open-mindedness, while equipping them with skills to discuss sensitive topics and grow from encountering intellectual diversity. OpenMind includes three components:

The OpenMind App

The app contains five interactive steps that prepare users for engaging in constructive disagreements. The app is quick, fun, and efficient. Users can complete each of the 10-25-minute steps on their own, at their own pace. To learn more about using the app with your community, please contact Caroline Mehl, the Co-Director of the project at caroline@heterodoxacademy.org.

The OpenMind Workshop

The app serves as a catalyst for ongoing, in-person conversations. We provide a guide for facilitators to use with participants after they complete the app. The guided conversation will enable participants to practice the skills they learned for constructive disagreement in a structured, face-to-face setting.

The OpenMind Library

The library offers an extensive array of essays, videos, academic articles, and books that correspond with each step in the OpenMind app. Professors can draw from these resources to build their own curricula, or to provide a deeper exploration of any of the materials covered in the app.

If you have ideas for how to use the OpenMind Platform in your school or company, or if you want to suggest additional resources, email Caroline Mehl at: caroline@heterodoxacademy.org.
