2025 HxA Conference

Conference imagelogo 2025

Join us in NYC June 23-25 to tackle the most urgent challenges facing higher education: defending academic freedom and open inquiry in a moment when the future of higher education is on the line.

Truth, Power, and Responsibility

In an era marked by unprecedented scrutiny of higher education, the stakes have never been higher. Our 2025 Conference theme, Truth, Power, and Responsibility, takes on new urgency as recent events highlight the fragility of academic freedom, the dangers of political overreach, and the weight of academic responsibility. It is imperative that we join together to defend the core values of higher education.

We’ve been witness to increasing debate on who is in charge of higher education, what gets taught in our classrooms, and what topics we research; we’ve seen renewed interest in bringing back core ideals of the university such as institutional neutrality while simultaneously seeing roll-backs of academic freedom; and we’ve grappled intimately with questions about ethical and professional responsibilities in our roles as faculty, students, and administrators in charting the future of the academy.

Our 2025 conference will convene scholars, educators, and academic leaders to explore how we can harness our collective influence to protect open inquiry and academic freedom in the face of myriad challenges in the academy today. We will also address the ethical responsibilities and duties that come with our academic roles, especially in a landscape where groupthink and polarization threaten to silence dissenting voices.

Across three days, our 500 expected attendees will experience dynamic programming from 100 speakers across presentations, panels, workshops, our signature Heterodox Conversations, and of course, our plenary panels featuring esteemed academics and university presidents. Join us at the conference where open minds meet. Abstract Submissions open September 16, 2024. Registration opens January 15, 2025.
