Alice Dreger Joins Heterodox Academy as its Inaugural Managing Editor
Heterodox Academy is excited to announce that historian and author Alice Dreger has joined Team HxA as the inaugural Managing Editor. Dreger has been part of HxA’s Advisory Council for several years and has been a tireless champion for open inquiry and viewpoint diversity in her professional work.
Dreger, who holds a PhD in History and Philosophy of Science from Indiana University, joins HxA with an impressive professional history. She is a Guggenheim Fellow, an award-winning writer, and the founder of East Lansing Info, a local news operation for which she served as publisher, editor, and reporter for a decade. She previously held faculty appointments for 20 years, most recently at Northwestern University, in addition to a broad writing and editorial background in both academic and public-facing venues.
Dreger is most known for her hard-hitting investigative history and journalism, her advocacy for the rights of people born with unusual anatomies, and her promotion of First Amendment rights, particularly free speech and press freedoms. She is the author of numerous books, the most popular being Galileo's Middle Finger: Heretics, Activists, and One Scholar’s Search for Justice.
“HxA is on the forefront of a cause I have myself advocated for many years, and it is a true honor to take on the position of inaugural managing editor,” said Dreger. “I’m thrilled to be moving from my advisory position at HxA to a staff position where I can collaborate directly with the team. I can’t wait to get started on the job of connecting our members to each other so we can supercharge this vital work."
In her new role at HxA, Dreger will be taking on a key position of intellectual leadership for the organization where she will solicit, curate, and publish the best writing about issues of open inquiry in higher education. Her work will expand the impact of HxA and connect members with the intellectual resources needed to advance open inquiry within their departments and disciplines, and across their campuses.
