Heterodox Academy Expands Campus Community Network. Harvard, Stanford Among New Institutions.

Heterodox Academy (HxA), a non-partisan, non-profit membership organization committed to improving institutions of higher education by advocating for the principles of open inquiry, viewpoint diversity, and constructive disagreement, announced the addition of 11 new Campus Communities joining its Network, including Harvard University, Stanford University, University of Waterloo, Brigham Young University, and Texas A&M University.

This fifth cohort of Campus Communities joins 71 others that have become part of the HxA Campus Community Network since its launch in January 2023. The Network now represents 82 campuses across North America and the UK, and collectively impacts 2.6 million students.

“Our Campus Communities not only champion open inquiry at their own institutions but also model what is possible for others,” said Bethany Boucher, Director of Member and Campus Engagement at Heterodox Academy. “The success of our existing communities has created a foundation for incoming Campus Communities, enabling them to grow on proven ground. As the Network expands, each new community both benefits from and contributes to this momentum, strengthening our collective impact across diverse institutions.”

Each Campus Community consists of faculty, staff, and students who work to improve culture and institutional practices on their campus by exemplifying HxA values. With the support of HxA, campuses in the Network have hosted over 225 campus programs and events to build relationships and demonstrate the value of constructive academic dialogue, and worked as principled allies with administrators to advance changes to campus policies, procedures, and norms to protect open inquiry and academic freedom.

The Campus Community Network accepts applications for new Campus Communities between April and August of each year.
