Heterodox Academy Welcomes 15 New Campus Communities to Its Growing Network
NOVEMBER 2, 2023, NEW YORK, NEW YORK — Heterodox Academy (HxA), a non-partisan, non-profit organization committed to improving institutions of higher education by advocating principles of open inquiry, viewpoint diversity, and constructive disagreement, announced the addition of 15 new campuses to the growing Campus Community Network, including Columbia University, Morehouse College, Texas Woman's University, the University of Birmingham, and the University of South Florida.
The addition of this third cohort since the launch of the Network in January 2023 brings the total reach of the Campus Community Network to 51 institutions that collectively serve over 1.1 million students – greatly expanding Heterodox Academy’s potential for wide-reaching impact on campus norms and policies.
“It’s exciting to see the impact that our first cohorts of Campus Communities are already having on their campuses,” said John Tomasi, President of Heterodox Academy. “We’re delighted to have 51 campuses across North America — and in the UK now, too — working to elevate our universities from within.”
Each Campus Community consists of faculty, staff, and students who work to improve culture and institutional practices on campuses by exemplifying HxA values. With the support of HxA, a team of co-chairs will engage in community building, hosting of regular gatherings, plan new initiatives and events, and collaborate with other leaders on their campuses.
“These new Campus Communities are led by HxA members who are dedicated to the academic missions of their institutions,” said Martha McCaughey, Director of Campus Engagement at Heterodox Academy. “At HxA we support the work of these exemplars of our values by providing resources for impact, from tools for professional development to guidance for hosting successful campus-wide events. These Campus Communities are strengthening our institutions of higher learning, campus by campus.”
