Heterodox Academy Welcomes Jonathan Rauch, Liz Joyner, Frank Laukien to its Board of Directors

JANUARY 27, 2025, NEW YORK, NEW YORK — Heterodox Academy (HxA), a non-partisan, non-profit membership organization committed to improving institutions of higher education by advocating principles of open inquiry, viewpoint diversity, and constructive disagreement welcomes three new members to its Board of Directors: Jonathan Rauch, Liz Joyner, and Frank Laukien.

Jonathan Rauch is a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution in Washington and the author of eight books, most recently The Constitution of Knowledge: A Defense of Truth. He’s also the author of many articles on public policy, culture, and government, is a contributing writer for The Atlantic, and recipient of the 2005 National Magazine Award. Rauch brings his deep knowledge of HxA’s principles to the Board.

Liz Joyner is the founder and president of The Village Square, a nonprofit dedicated to building civic trust between people who don't look or think alike in American hometowns. Liz was named by USA Today as an "extraordinary American who is making our nation a better place" and David Blankenhorn, founder of Braver Angels, called her "likely the best organizer working in this area today." Joyner brings her extensive non-profit executive expertise to the Board.

Frank Laukien is an innovation-focused second-generation biotech entrepreneur and the Chairman, President and CEO of Bruker Corporation. He is also a Visiting Scholar in the Harvard Department of Chemistry & Chemical Biology and in the Harvard Origins of Life Initiative. He served on the Dean’s Advisory Committee of the MIT School of Science for many years until 2014, and presently serves on the Visiting Committee for the MIT Department of Chemistry. holds a Bachelor of Science in physics from MIT (1984), and a PhD in chemical physics from Harvard University (1988). Laukien brings a breadth of strategic growth expertise to the board.

Rauch, Joyner, and Laukien join current Board members Jonathan Haidt (Chair; Thomas Cooley Professor of Ethical Leadership at NYU), Steven Laub (retired corporate executive), Tony Banout (Executive Director of the Forum for Free Inquiry and Expression at University of Chicago), Jeffrey Flier (Higginson Professor of Physiology and Medicine at Harvard Medical School), Kathleen O’Connor (Vice President, Legal, AQR Capital Management), and Kate Stith (Lafayette S. Foster Professor of Law at Yale Law School).
