Enabling & Practicing Constructive Disagreement on Campus
Many faculty and campus leaders want to encourage constructive disagreement in their classrooms and academic communities, but often lack clear models or practical resources for doing so. Heterodox Academy’s forthcoming Constructive Disagreement Resource Guide brings together tools, programs, and campus initiatives designed to help scholars and students engage disagreement in ways that advance learning, inquiry, and intellectual growth.
In this panel discussion, HxA members, Martha McCaughey of the University of Wyoming, Jennifer Wargin of the University of Missouri, Kansas City, and Sarah Hartman-Caverly of Penn State Berks will discuss the resources they have developed to help students and scholars engage disagreement productively. Panelists will discuss what motivated their work, the challenges they encountered when implementing these initiatives, and the lessons they have learned along the way.
Moderated by Dylan Selterman, HxA’s Director of Research and Resource Development, the conversation will highlight a range of approaches—from classroom and research practices that cultivate intellectual humility and charitable engagement to campus initiatives that support open inquiry at scale. Panelists will also reflect on why constructive disagreement matters on campus and how faculty and campus leaders can strengthen it within their own institutions.
Participants will leave with concrete examples of resources and initiatives they can explore, adapt, and implement on their own campuses.
This 75-minute public webinar will include time for live audience Q&A. Register today to join the discussion!
