How to Work with Your University Administration (HxA Members Only)
Meaningful change in higher education requires both principled clarity and practical skill and a commitment to shared governance. Many HxA members are working to strengthen campus culture by clarifying the university’s core purpose, protecting open inquiry, or fostering constructive disagreement in classrooms and public forums. Turning good ideas into durable institutional outcomes depends on understanding how decisions are made and how to build productive relationships with those in leadership. In this interactive workshop offered exclusively to HxA members, we will focus on how to work effectively with your university’s administration to advance reforms.
Led by Justin McBrayer, HxA’s Director of University Partnerships, the session will also feature Jeff Breneman, Vice President for Government Relations and External Partnerships and co-chair of the HxA campus community at Western Michigan University, and Phoebe Sengers, co-chair of the Committee on the Future of the American University, Special Advisor to the Provost, and co-chair of the HxA campus community at Cornell University. Together, they will share lessons about identifying opportunities, navigating obstacles, framing proposals strategically, and sustaining momentum over time. Attendees will leave with
- A clearer understanding of administrative structures
- Practical tools for engaging campus leaders
- A framework for advancing open inquiry and pluralism within their own institutional contexts.
