Last week, Florida governor Ron DeSantis signed legislation requiring Florida’s state universities to “conduct an annual assessment of the intellectual freedom and viewpoint diversity,” via “an objective, nonpartisan, and statistically valid survey…which considers the extent to which competing ideas and perspectives are presented and members of the university community, including students, faculty, and staff, feel free to express their beliefs and viewpoints on campus and in the classroom.”
Because the statute concerns topics that are highly relevant to Heterodox Academy’s mission and to the HxA community, we hosted two informal virtual gatherings where our members and affiliates discussed the new law and its potential implications–both negative and positive–for academic freedom and viewpoint diversity.
