In the United States, the demographic circumstances of a child’s birth substantially shape their academic success. Yet absent from most socioeconomic analyses of the U.S. is its highly religious population— we are the most devout country among rich Western democracies. How does a religious upbringing influence a student’s academic outcomes?
In this talk, Dr. Horwitz will discuss research from her new book, God, Grades, and Graduation: Religion’s Surprising Impact on Academic Success (Oxford University Press, 2022). She will explain why intensely religious students tend to overperform in educational attainment and undermatch in college choice, and how the relationship between religion and academic outcomes varies by socioeconomic status. There will be ample time for audience Q&A.
