The Podium Belongs to the Graduates: A Defense of Commencement Neutrality

Commencement season is here, and so is the annual controversy over what speakers should and shouldn't say.

Too often, graduation ceremonies have become platforms for political advocacy, ideological signaling, and partisan commentary. The result? A ceremony meant to unite a diverse community of graduates often instead become sharp moments of political division.

John Tomasi, HxA President, and Jeffrey S. Flier, HxA Board Chair and former Dean of Harvard Medical School, argue there's a better way. Join them for a candid conversation about why commencement neutrality matters, what it looks like in practice, and why keeping politics off the graduation stage isn't a retreat from principle — it's an affirmation of what universities are for.

This conversation builds on their recent piece, "Keep Politics Out of Commencement Speeches," published in the Boston Globe. Read it here.
