The Uses and Abuses of Viewpoint Diversity
The failure of university faculty to provide sufficient viewpoint diversity in their courses has emerged as a topic of contestation, with the Heterodox Academy, for example, making viewpoint diversity a centerpiece of its reform agenda and critics on both the left and the right raising questions about it.
This session hosted by the HxA Campus Chapter at UC Riverside will ask (1) whether viewpoint diversity can be defined; (2) whether and, if so, where it is missing from college classrooms; (3) when it is necessary in university teaching and when it is not necessary; and (4) whether the state should be involved in any way to monitor it (as has occurred recently in Indiana).
Nicolas Langlitz (New School for Social Research) will present on "the uses and abuses of viewpoint diversity" in university teaching. Steven Brint (UC Riverside) will serve as interlocutor.
This free, hybrid event is open to the broader UC Riverside community. Please register in advance for online participation.
When: Thursday, May 14 at 12:30-2:00 PM PST
Where: UC Riverside - INTS 1113 and online via Zoom
