When University Investigations of Faculty Go Off the Rails

As campus investigations into faculty appear to become increasingly common, what does this trend mean for academic freedom and open inquiry in higher education? Join Heterodox Academy (HxA) for a discussion with contributors to Professors Speak Out: The Truth about Campus Investigations, a new book that sheds light on the experiences of faculty members who have faced university investigations—often for expressing controversial or disfavored viewpoints.

Moderated by Alice Dreger, HxA’s Managing Editor, this panel will feature:

  • Nick Wolfinger (University of Utah) - editor of Professors Speak Out
  • Patti Adler (University of Colorado) - whose university pressured her to resign over a routine lecture on prostitution in her “Deviance in U.S. Society” course.
  • Stephen Porter (North Carolina State University) - whose university tried to force him out after he called an academic conference a "woke joke" on his blog.

Panelists will share their personal stories, examine the bureaucratic processes behind these investigations, and discuss the broader implications for higher education.
