Heterodox Academy Launches Campus Community Network with Inaugural Cohort of 23 Campus Communities

Editors Note: Our campus community network has grown since this announcement. See our home page for the most up-to-date information on the Network.

The new Campus Communities, organized by HxA members at each university, will promote HxA values to improve institutional practices and culture.

January 9, 2023, New York, NY — Heterodox Academy (HxA), a non-partisan organization dedicated to improving institutions of higher education by advocating for principles of viewpoint diversity, open inquiry, and constructive disagreement, announced the launch of their Campus Community Network. The inaugural cohort is made up of 23 HxA Campus Communities at universities across the US and Canada, including MIT, UC Berkeley, and McGill University.

The Campus Community Network aims to change campus culture and institutional practices by empowering members to promote HxA values. Each Campus Community will be led by several HxA member co-chairs who are faculty, staff, or graduate students at the university. With the support of HxA, the co-chairs will foster a community of academics to organize events, host monthly gatherings, and collaborate with leaders on their campuses.

“We received 43 applications from teams of members eager to build HxA Campus Communities. Clearly, the time is ripe for HxA to begin organizing for impact directly on campuses” said John Tomasi, President of Heterodox Academy. “HxA’s guiding idea in 2023 will be: Impact on Campus.”

The Campus Community Network is a natural extension of the virtual HxCommunities launched in 2018, now totaling 26 communities with nearly 3,000 participants. The new Campus Communities will give HxA members opportunities to work directly on their campuses with peers and supporters to foster positive culture change. Each Campus Community will receive at least $3,000 in program expenses from HxA to support activities in their first year, and intensive consulting from HxA staff, in addition to peer support from across the Network.

“HxA's greatest strength is its membership. The Campus Community Network is an exciting opportunity for HxA to directly partner with its members, and to learn from, support, and elevate their work” said Christine Richards, Director of Membership at Heterodox Academy. “We look forward to seeing the impact of their ongoing commitment to the HxA mission.”

The co-chairs of each of Campus Community will meet virtually this month with the HxA team to kick-off the Network. HxA plans to expand with future cohorts this year.
