Heterodox Academy at University of Maryland

Heterodox Academy at University of Maryland is committed to bringing HxA principles and values of open inquiry, viewpoint diversity, and constructive disagreement into curriculum and programming across our university.

  1. Embracing Relentless Inquiry: question boldly and examine every assumption, including our own, for only through persistent inquiry may truth emerge.
  2. Engaging in Respectful Fact-based Dialogue: we honor every voice in the academic community, inviting debate and welcoming dissent, as it is through the clash of ideas that insight is refined.
  3. Cultivating Intellectual Humility: We will remain ever mindful that knowledge is vast and that the unexamined life is unworthy of being lived, continuously seeking to learn from both triumphs and mistakes.
  4. Upholding Academic Integrity: We treat ideas, evidence, and argument with the utmost respect and rigor, shunning dogma, self-interest, and the facile allure of certainty.
  5. Fostering Collegiate Heaven: In the hallowed halls of academia, we commit to defending a space where free thought, creative debate, and the search for truth can flourish—where every question is welcomed and every answer is provisional.

To this end some members of our campus community based at the Robert H Smith School of Business have established the Fact-Based Discourse Initiative (FBDI) at the Ed Snider Center for Enterprise and Markets and held several events (e.g. Social Media and Extremism, Negotiations in the Middle East) with participation of faculty, students and members of the larger Maryland community. We have also established a partnership with the UMD student chapter of BridgeUSA to co-sponsor discussion events bringing together their membership with our community to practice constructive disagreement on a variety of topics.

Heterodox Academy Campus Community at the University of Maryland is currently made up of nearly 20 faculty and administrator members and we are motivated to expand our community membership. We encourage the HxA curious on our campus to reach out to any of the co-chairs. We aim to grow the Campus Community through meetings in the coming year and we will continue to sponsor and co-sponsor events that align with the HxA Way.
