What does it mean to be a member of Heterodox Academy?

All members of Heterodox Academy endorse this statement:

“I believe that university life requires that people with diverse viewpoints and perspectives encounter each other in an environment where they feel free to speak up and challenge each other. I am concerned that many academic fields and universities currently lack sufficient viewpoint diversity. I support viewpoint diversity, mutual understanding, and constructive disagreement in my academic field, my institution, my department, and my classroom.”

By becoming a member of Heterodox Academy, you’ll help to increase social permission in the academy to embrace the values of open inquiry, viewpoint diversity, and constructive disagreement. To that end, all members agree to publicly endorse the above statement by allowing their name and institutional affiliation to be listed on our website.

All members join a dynamic and growing network of university faculty, staff, administrator, and graduate students that embody the values of open inquiry, viewpoint diversity, and constructive disagreement on their campuses. We actively engage that network in service to our members and the broader academy – we’d love for you to join us!

Membership is open to those who meet any of the following criteria:

  • Full-time faculty with a PhD or the terminal degree in their field (e.g. MFA, MBA, MLS, JD, MD) and a current appointment at a university
  • Former full-time faculty with at least five years prior full-time teaching experience
  • Adjunct or part-time professors
  • Faculty with no terminal degree but five years full-time teaching experience
  • Retired/Emeritus professors
  • Administrators and university staff
  • Students in a PhD or terminal master’s degree program with the intent to become professors

Not sure if you’re eligible? Our application will guide you with key questions to determine your eligibility for membership. Applications will be vetted by our Membership Committee; you should hear back from us within two weeks.

If you support our mission, but do not meet the criteria listed above, we welcome you to become a “Friend of HxA.” You’ll receive our weekly bulletin, and, if you indicate interest, will be connected with organizations that promote these values outside the higher education space as well as with fellow heterodoxy enthusiasts.
