JOINING HETERODOX ACADEMY

Browse the categories below to find where to apply.

Academic membership in Heterodox Academy is open to anyone who has earned a PhD and has an appointment at a university, anywhere in the world. Many other people are eligible if they are, or were, more or less living and working as a professor. These include:

  1. retired or emeritus professors;
  2. adjunct or part-time professors who have a Ph.D.;
  3. full-time faculty members who do not have a Ph.D. but have the terminal degree is in their field (e.g., MD, JD, MFA).

We would also consider people who have no such degree, yet have been teaching at a college or university full time for at least five years. People who are teaching part-time and who don’t fit any of the previous four categories are welcome to apply as a professional affiliate.

All members endorse the following statement: “I believe that university life requires that people with diverse viewpoints and perspectives encounter each other in an environment where they feel free to speak up and challenge each other. I am concerned that many academic fields and universities currently lack sufficient viewpoint diversity. I support viewpoint diversity, mutual understanding, and constructive disagreement in my academic field, my institution, my department, and my classroom.”

While our mission focuses exclusively on the academy, we realize that many people beyond college and university faculty, staff, and administrators value viewpoint diversity, mutual understanding, and constructive disagreement.

We invite everyone–students, parents, alumni, and other heterodoxy enthusiasts– to demonstrate their support for the Heterodox Academy mission by signing up to receive our weekly email bulletin as a “Friend of HxA.”

Application Notes

Academic Membership vs. Affiliate Status: Although HxA academic membership is limited to professors (current and former) many others have a stake in the health of the academy and thus support our mission. To help make that support visible, we invite other university employees, and graduate students to apply for affiliate status. While our mission focuses exclusively on the academy, we realize that many people beyond college and university faculty, staff, and administrators value viewpoint diversity, mutual understanding, and constructive disagreement; we invite everyone–students, parents, alumni, and other heterodoxy enthusiasts– to demonstrate their support for the Heterodox Academy mission by signing up to receive our weekly email bulletin.

International Applicants: Our current focus is on universities in the United States, though we are slowly branching out to address viewpoint diversity in other countries. We recognize that political homogeneity and the suppression of dissenting views is a problem in many countries, and we welcome applications from professors and grad student affiliates in other English speaking countries.

Application Process: Membership decisions are made by the membership committee, which evaluates each applicant’s background. Membership can be revoked at any time. Members may withdraw at any time too. While there is no work required and we do not collect dues or fees, we invite members to contribute their time and talents in support of the HxA mission.

Public Statements: Our academic members, affiliates, and friends are politically diverse; individuals speak for themselves. Views expressed by individual writers on our blogs cannot be taken to imply endorsement by members, affiliates, friends or the organization. We rarely take positions as an organization. Rather, we provide a platform on which “the HxA way” can be featured, namely that we approach an issue from a variety of perspectives, supporting the free expression of ideas– along with dissenting opinions. We believe the academic world must welcome and celebrate viewpoint diversity if it is to function properly, produce reliable research, and prepare students to solve challenging problems. We strive to maintain a tone of constructive disagreement and mutual understanding throughout our website and within the exchanges in our comments.
