Whither International Relations? Reclaiming Critical Thinking and Freedom of Speech
Join HxA at the University of Birmingham for a talk by Dr Edward Howell, Lecturer in International Relations at the University of Oxford. What should we study when we study International Relations? How should we learn about the pressing issues in global security? Far from what the early International Relations scholars— writing in the aftermath of the First World War—could have imagined, this young discipline has now become embedded within calls for its ‘decolonisation’. The need to think critically has become usurped by the dominance of so-called ‘critical theoretical’ approaches, and value-laden charges of ‘Eurocentrism’ and ‘Western-centrism’. As the disciplines of Politics and International Relations increasingly seem to prioritise activism over academia, this talk looks as how we can try and ‘reclaim’ International Relations at a time when more broadly, academic freedom and freedom of speech are increasingly at threat within universities.
This free talk is open to the public and will be followed by Q&A. For more info please contact: Professor Rita Floyd, r.floyd@bham.ac.uk
